Frequently asked
What are the 2026 Boston Marathon qualifying times?
BQ times range from 2:55:00 for men 18–34 to 5:20:00 for women 80+. The BAA tightened standards by 5 minutes across every age group for 2026. Use the calculator above to check your status.
How much faster than BQ do I really need to run?
Recent acceptance cut-offs have been 5–7 minutes faster than the published standard. We recommend training for BQ-6 to BQ-10 to give yourself a real buffer.
When does Boston Marathon registration open?
Mid-September for the following April's race. Runners register based on how much they beat their BQ time — the fastest qualifiers (BQ-20+) register first, rolling down by margin over the registration week.
Which races are best for a BQ?
California International Marathon (CIM), Chicago, Berlin, Grandma's, and Erie are the most reliable BQ courses. Fast, flat, and weather usually cooperates. Avoid the Newton Hills if you're chasing a time — Boston itself adds 3–8 min versus a flat course.
