The BQ playbook

Course & strategy

  • Net −459 ft elevation but don't underestimate it
  • Miles 1–5: hold back, downhill tempts overpace
  • Miles 16–20: Newton Hills (Heartbreak at 20)
  • Final 10K: fast downhill to Boylston — save fuel
  • Weather April Boston: 40°F to 70°F range

Race selection

  • Pick a certified, fast course (BAA-approved list)
  • Fall marathons (Sep–Nov) line up with the April race
  • Top BQ courses: CIM, Chicago, Berlin, Grandma's
  • Avoid extreme heat, hilly, or windy courses
  • Run two BQ attempts if possible — primary + backup

Training essentials

  • 16–20 week build for a BQ attempt
  • Peak 50–70 mi/week depending on goal time
  • MP tempo, VO2 intervals, hill repeats for Newton
  • Long runs 18–22 mi with race-pace segments
  • Rehearse race nutrition in every long run

Registration strategy

  • Window: ~1 week in mid-September
  • Day 1: BQ-20+ runners, then BQ-10+, then BQ-5+
  • Cut-off announced ~1 week after window closes
  • Target BQ-6 to BQ-10 for safe acceptance
  • Watch BAA.org for exact dates each year

Frequently asked

What are the 2026 Boston Marathon qualifying times?

BQ times range from 2:55:00 for men 18–34 to 5:20:00 for women 80+. The BAA tightened standards by 5 minutes across every age group for 2026. Use the calculator above to check your status.

How much faster than BQ do I really need to run?

Recent acceptance cut-offs have been 5–7 minutes faster than the published standard. We recommend training for BQ-6 to BQ-10 to give yourself a real buffer.

When does Boston Marathon registration open?

Mid-September for the following April's race. Runners register based on how much they beat their BQ time — the fastest qualifiers (BQ-20+) register first, rolling down by margin over the registration week.

Which races are best for a BQ?

California International Marathon (CIM), Chicago, Berlin, Grandma's, and Erie are the most reliable BQ courses. Fast, flat, and weather usually cooperates. Avoid the Newton Hills if you're chasing a time — Boston itself adds 3–8 min versus a flat course.
