NYC qualifying FAQ

What time do I need to qualify for the NYC Marathon?

Your standard depends on your age on race day, your division and the distance you race. For the 2027 TCS New York City Marathon, men 18–34 need 2:53:00 in the marathon or 1:21:00 in an eligible NYRR half marathon; women and non-binary athletes 18–34 need 3:13:00 or 1:32:00.

Can I qualify with any half marathon?

No. Half-marathon time qualifiers must be run at an eligible NYRR race — currently the United Airlines NYC Half, Maybelline Women's Half, RBC Brooklyn Half, Staten Island Half. A marathon qualifier can be run at any certified marathon inside the qualifying window.

What is the qualifying window?

For the 2027 race, qualifying performances must be run between 1 January – 31 December 2026.

Which age do I use?

Your age on NYC Marathon race day (7 November 2027) — not your age on the day you ran the qualifying race.

Is there a non-binary standard?

Yes. NYRR recognises a non-binary division and applies the same standards as the women's division.

Do I need a buffer like Boston?

No. Unlike Boston, NYRR time qualifying is not a cutoff-based rolling admission — hitting the published standard inside the window earns guaranteed entry. Training a little under the standard is still smart insurance against a hard day.

Methodology and assumptions

NYRR published time-qualifier standards for guaranteed entry

Qualified = finish time ≤ NYRR standard for age on race day and gender,
run at the qualifying distance (marathon anywhere, or half marathon at an
eligible NYRR race) inside the published qualifying window.
What it assumes
  • Your qualifying race was a certified course, and half-marathon qualifiers were run at an eligible NYRR event.
  • Your age is taken as of NYC Marathon race day, not the date of the qualifier.
  • NYRR applies the women's standards to the non-binary division.
Known limitations
  • Time qualifying is one of several entry routes; NYRR also runs a drawing, 9+1, and charity entries.
  • Standards are revised periodically, so always confirm against the current NYRR page before you race.

How your NYC standard is determined

NYRR publishes separate marathon and half-marathon time standards in five-year age bands, using your age on race day.

Half-marathon qualifiers only count when run at an eligible NYRR race; marathon qualifiers can be run at any certified marathon inside the qualifying window.

The women's standards are also applied to the non-binary division.
