Hitting a Boston Qualifying time and getting into Boston are two different things. Since 2012 the BAA has run a rolling registration: the fastest qualifiers within each age group get in first, and a cutoff is set wherever applications meet the field size. The cutoff has grown from 0 seconds to 5+ minutes faster than the published standard in just over a decade.

Why the cutoff exists

Boston has roughly 30,000 spots. Charity bibs, sponsors, and elite/legacy entries consume around 5,000. That leaves ~25,000 time-qualifier spots. When more than 25,000 qualifiers apply, the slowest get cut — even though they hit the official BQ standard.

Cutoff times by year

2014–2019: the early rolling-registration era

  • 2014: 1 minute 38 seconds under the standard
  • 2015: 1 minute 2 seconds under
  • 2016: 2 minutes 28 seconds under
  • 2017: 2 minutes 9 seconds under
  • 2018: 3 minutes 23 seconds under
  • 2019: 4 minutes 52 seconds under (BAA tightened standards by 5 min for 2020)

2020–2022: the COVID years

  • 2020: 1 minute 39 seconds under (race held virtually)
  • 2021: no cutoff — reduced field size with extended qualifying window
  • 2022: no cutoff — pent-up demand met by a flexible BAA

2023–2026: the new normal

  • 2023: no cutoff (field returned to 30,000)
  • 2024: 5 minutes 29 seconds under — record cutoff
  • 2025: 6 minutes 51 seconds under — a new record (BAA tightened standards again for 2026)
  • 2026: under 2 min projected with new tighter standards in effect

If your BQ time is exactly the standard, plan as if you didn't qualify. The cutoff has averaged 4+ minutes under the standard in the last decade.

What 2027 will likely require

The 2026 race used new, 5-minute-tighter standards across all age groups, which should reduce the cutoff initially. Based on registration patterns since 2014, the 2027 cutoff will likely land between 1:30 and 3:30 under the standard for most age groups. Plan for at least 3 minutes under to be safe.

Age-group standards in effect for 2026 and 2027

  • Men 18–34: 2:55:00 (women 3:25:00)
  • Men 35–39: 3:00:00 (women 3:30:00)
  • Men 40–44: 3:05:00 (women 3:35:00)
  • Men 45–49: 3:15:00 (women 3:45:00)
  • Men 50–54: 3:20:00 (women 3:50:00)
  • Men 55–59: 3:30:00 (women 4:00:00)
  • Men 60–64: 3:50:00 (women 4:20:00)
  • Men 65–69: 4:05:00 (women 4:35:00)

How to actually beat the cutoff

  1. 01Target 5 minutes under your standard — not the standard itself
  2. 02Pick a fast, certified course (Berlin, Chicago, CIM, Indianapolis Monumental, Erie)
  3. 03Train 18–20 weeks with a structured plan and at least one tune-up half marathon
  4. 04Run the race within 9 months of the Boston registration window for that year
  5. 05If you BQ by less than 3 minutes, register a backup race within the qualifying window
Frequently asked

Questions athletes ask about this

What was the Boston Marathon cutoff for 2025?
The 2025 Boston Marathon cutoff was 6 minutes 51 seconds under the official qualifying standard — the largest cutoff in race history. The BAA responded by tightening standards by 5 minutes across all age groups starting with the 2026 race.
What will the 2027 Boston Marathon cutoff be?
Based on registration patterns since 2014 and the new tighter 2026 standards, the 2027 cutoff is projected at 1:30–3:30 under the published standard. Plan for at least 3 minutes under your standard to register safely.
How much faster than the BQ standard do I need to run?
5 minutes under your age-group standard is the safe buffer based on the last decade. In years following a standards tightening (like 2026), the cutoff temporarily shrinks, but it has historically returned to 3+ minutes within two cycles.
Why does Boston have a cutoff time?
Boston has about 30,000 total spots. After charity, sponsor, and elite entries, roughly 25,000 are available to time qualifiers. When more than 25,000 qualifiers apply, the slowest are cut off — even if they hit the official BQ standard.
What is the BQ standard for a 40-year-old man in 2027?
The Boston qualifying standard for men 40–44 is 3:05:00 (women 3:35:00). However, to actually register and get in, plan to run 3:00:00 or faster based on the cutoff history.
When does Boston Marathon registration open?
Boston Marathon registration typically opens in mid-September for the following year's April race. The qualifying window is roughly 18 months — qualifying times from September of two years prior through the close of registration are valid.
