New York City Marathon coaching
New York asks you to manage bridges, crowds and changes in rhythm across five boroughs. A rigid pace target can work against you on the climbs. I prepare runners to hold controlled effort, fuel through interruptions and arrive at Central Park with enough left to race the final miles.
FIELD NOTES · 16 SECONDS
Effort over pace.
A short visual explanation before you work through the details.
The drawings illustrate pacing decisions. They are not measured elevation profiles or navigation maps.

New York is an effort race. Let the bridges change your pace. Stay comfortable early and resist racing the crowds. Save enough for the final miles. Follow effort, not perfectly even splits.

01 · Opening bridge
Accept a slower uphill split. Don’t sprint the descent to recover it.
02 · Brooklyn and Queens
Find rhythm and keep fueling. The crowd is loud; your effort should be quiet.
03 · Queensboro and Manhattan
Keep the bridge controlled, then resist the surge off it.
04 · Bronx to Central Park
Expect fatigue before the finish. Hold form and solve the next mile.
What should I plan before race week?
Start transportation, start color and wave timing affect your morning. Check the current NYRR runner guide before booking your route to the start.
How warm can the New York City Marathon be?
| Year | Race date | Finish °F | Finish °C |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2019 | November 3 | 50 | 10 |
| 2021 | November 7 | 51 | 10 |

| 2023 | November 5 | 61 | 16 |
| 2024 | November 3 | 48 | 9 |
November does not guarantee a cool race. I’d practice a warmer-day effort and fueling plan before committing to one pace. These five editions are examples, not a probability model or a forecast.
NYRR 2025 media guideWeather belongs in the strategy.
Use the event’s current forecast close to race day. A climate average is not a forecast, and a city-wide monthly average is not race-start weather. Where historical measurements are available, the table identifies what the organizer recorded and what the source leaves unspecified.
How conditions change effortMake the arithmetic useful.
Use a recent result and your practiced fueling to organize the race plan. A calculator can clarify a target; it cannot establish your readiness.
Questions, answered.
How should I pace New York City Marathon?
Accept a slower uphill split. Don’t sprint the descent to recover it. Find rhythm and keep fueling. The crowd is loud; your effort should be quiet. Keep the bridge controlled, then resist the surge off it. Expect fatigue before the finish. Hold form and solve the next mile.
Is a calculated time a race guarantee?
No. Race models and split scenarios cannot establish durability, fueling tolerance or the weather on your day.
Which course guide should I use?
Use the current official edition. Old maps and guides are context, not instructions for this year’s logistics.
What should I practice before the race?
Pacing, fueling, equipment and the decisions you will need under fatigue. The preparation should fit the event and your starting point.
Can we review my race strategy?
Yes. Book a free discovery call to discuss the goal and whether personal coaching fits.
