Your first triathlon: the complete checklist.
You don't need a $5,000 TT bike or race wheels. You need the right gear, a realistic plan, and a transition setup that doesn't cost you 4 minutes. This is the complete first-triathlon guide I walk every new athlete through.
- →Sprint distance is the right first race for almost everyone: 750m swim, 20K bike, 5K run.
- →Minimum viable gear under $400: helmet, goggles, tri-suit, race belt, your existing bike and running shoes.
- →Train all three sports each week. Swimming gets the most attention — it's where most beginners struggle.
- →Practice transitions. Most first-timers lose more time to clumsy T1/T2 than to fitness.
The minimum gear list.
Essential: bike (any roadworthy bike), helmet, goggles, tri-suit or shorts + tech top, running shoes, race belt. Recommended: wetsuit (rent or buy used), bike computer, sunglasses, body glide, anti-chafe stick. Skip for race #1: TT bike, race wheels, power meter, aerobars, carbon-plated shoes.
The 12-week training framework.
Weeks 1–4 (base): 2 swims, 2 bikes, 2 runs per week. Build comfort and continuous time in each. Weeks 5–8 (build): add a third bike OR run, introduce one quality session per discipline, do 1 brick (bike→run) per week. Weeks 9–11 (sharpen): race-pace efforts, full distance rehearsal, swim in open water if you can. Week 12: taper — cut volume 50%, do 2–3 short workouts to stay sharp.
Transition setup that doesn't waste time.
T1 (swim→bike): towel down, helmet on FIRST (the rule), glasses, top, shoes, bike. T2 (bike→run): rack bike, helmet off, shoe swap, hat, race belt around waist, go. Practice both at home. The athletes who finish with smiles instead of stress are the ones who walked through transition 10 times before race day.
Race morning execution.
Eat 2.5–3 hours before start: 80–100g carbs, low fiber. Arrive 90 min early. Set up transition: bike on rack, helmet upside-down on aerobars, shoes laid out, glasses inside helmet, race belt clipped. Warm up: 10 min walk + 5 min jog + 100m swim if allowed. Start in the back of the swim wave if you're nervous — you'll have clean water and avoid contact.
The 5 mistakes every first-timer makes.
1. Going out too fast on the swim. 2. Hammering the bike and bonking on the run. 3. New gear on race day. 4. Skipping breakfast or eating too much. 5. Forgetting to unclip at the dismount line. Plan around these and you'll finish strong.
FAQ
What gear do I actually need for my first triathlon?
Bike (any road or hybrid bike), helmet, goggles, tri-suit or running shorts + top, running shoes. Wetsuit if water is under 78°F and the race allows it. You do NOT need a TT bike, race wheels, or power meter.
Do I need to swim freestyle?
No. Many first-timers swim breaststroke or sidestroke and finish well. Comfort and breathing matter more than stroke. If you can swim 500m continuously in a pool, you can finish a sprint triathlon.
How long should I train for my first triathlon?
8–12 weeks for a sprint distance starting from basic fitness in all three sports. 12–16 weeks if you're new to one of the disciplines (usually swimming).
