Running coach in Boston.

A Boston running coach plans your week around the city you train in: the Charles for measured tempo, the Newton hills for marathon-specific strength, the Reggie Lewis track when the river is iced over, and dew-point-adjusted paces through the summer. I coach runners in Back Bay, Brookline, Newton, Cambridge and Somerville in person, and everywhere else remotely with the same weekly cadence.

Charles River · Hatch Shell · Reggie Lewis

Boston · Back Bay · Fenway

Most online running coaches send the same threshold workout to an athlete in Phoenix and an athlete in Boston. That ignores the two things that shape your training here: terrain and weather. Boston gives you five months of single-digit windchill, a humid summer, hills that don't appear on flat marathon courses, and the most demanding amateur marathon in the world in your backyard. I coach to the conditions you actually train in — indoor track at the Reggie Lewis when the river path is iced over, dew-point-adjusted paces from July through early September, Newton hills built into every Boston build, long runs that meet at the Hatch Shell.

  • Charles River Esplanade loop (flat, measured)
  • Hatch Shell Saturday long runs
  • Reggie Lewis indoor track (winter)
  • Jamaica Pond + Emerald Necklace easy days

Heartbreak Hill · Beacon Street · Comm Ave

Brookline · Newton

You live on the back half of the Boston Marathon course. Use it. Most Boston Marathon implosions happen between mile 16 and mile 21 — the Newton hills. If you live in Brookline or Newton, those hills are your tempo route. We build the plan around them: progression runs that climb Comm Ave, threshold reps that finish at Heartbreak, long runs that put fatigued legs on the same grade you'll race. Jamaica Pond, the Emerald Necklace and the Carriage Road cover the easy days.

  • Comm Ave progression runs (Newton hills)
  • Threshold reps finishing at Heartbreak
  • Carriage Road easy miles
  • Beacon Street race-pace segments

Charles loop · Fresh Pond · Minuteman

Cambridge · Somerville

The Charles loop is famous for a reason — it's flat, measured and crowded with strong runners. That's both the appeal and the trap. Easy runs creep into tempo. Long runs blur into junk volume. A coach turns that ambient pressure into structure: which day is the workout, which day you back off, and what the next ten weeks actually build toward. Most Cambridge athletes I coach are graduate students, founders, doctors and engineers. Schedules shift. Travel happens. The plan moves with you — not the other way around.

  • Charles River bridges loop (tempo)
  • Fresh Pond easy loops
  • Minuteman Bikeway long runs
  • MIT / Harvard tracks for intervals

Not in Boston? Remote works the same way

About a quarter of the roster trains in Greater Boston; the rest are coached remotely from NYC, Miami, Chicago, LA, Austin, Denver, Toronto, London, Lisbon, São Paulo, Madrid, Sydney and Dubai with the same weekly cadence. The things that decide race outcomes — periodisation, race selection, fuelling, taper, pacing — are delivered just as well remotely. Plans land weekly in TrainingPeaks and sync to your watch; daily messaging, 24-hour workout review, video form analysis and a monthly call are the same whether you run past Fenway or not.

Questions Boston runners ask

How do I find a running coach near me in Boston?
Look for RRCA or USAT certification, experience coaching runners at your level, and local knowledge of the routes you'll actually use — the Charles, the Newton hills, Fresh Pond, the Reggie Lewis track in winter. Check athlete results, not just testimonials, and whether the coach offers a written answer before you commit.
Can a running coach help me with Heartbreak Hill?
Yes. Living on the Boston Marathon back half is an advantage if you train it right: progression runs up Comm Ave, threshold reps that finish at Heartbreak, and long runs that put fatigued legs on the same grade you'll race. The hills become familiar instead of feared.
What's the difference between in-person and online running coaching?
In-person adds real-time form feedback and shared route knowledge. Online delivers the same structured plan, the same weekly review and the same messaging, and works across time zones. Boston-area athletes get both; everyone else gets the asynchronous version, which is where the results actually come from.
How often will I communicate with my running coach?
Essential includes async messaging with replies /4wk. Performance adds daily messaging and a weekly video call. Elite includes same-day replies and race-week daily check-ins.
Do you coach beginners, or only Boston qualifiers?
Both. Roughly a third of the roster is working toward a first half or full marathon; the rest are chasing a time standard. The plan structure is the same — what changes is the volume, the paces and how fast we progress.
