Pan-Mass Challenge coaching
Pan-Mass Challenge preparation starts with the route you’ve chosen and the hours you can ride consistently. I coach riders to build comfort, endurance and a fueling routine for long days. Back-to-back practice matters when the event spans two days. We prepare for the ride you’ll do, rather than an abstract fitness number.

Which route fits your week?

01 · Worcester to Franklin · first 33 miles
The early miles include the highest sampled ground. Keep climbing effort steady; do not chase the group over every crest.
02 · Franklin to Dighton-Rehoboth · miles 33–60
Keep eating between stops. Lunch at mile 60 should support the afternoon, not repair an empty morning.
03 · Dighton-Rehoboth to Bourne · miles 60–100
Keep the last hour controlled. You still need to eat, recover and sleep before day two.
04 · Bourne to Provincetown · day two
The Cape has repeated rises. Find your rhythm again before increasing effort, and use the stops to refill before leaving.

What should I plan before race week?
PMC moved its longest route’s start from Sturbridge to Worcester in 2026. The two-day Worcester route covers about 100 miles to Bourne, then 77 miles to Provincetown. Confirm the next edition’s route and transport before booking. Choose the route first; I’ll build the training around its longest day.
Weather belongs in the strategy.
Use the event’s current forecast close to race day. A climate average is not a forecast, and a city-wide monthly average is not race-start weather. Where historical measurements are available, the table identifies what the organizer recorded and what the source leaves unspecified.
How conditions change effortMake the arithmetic useful.
Use a recent result and your practiced fueling to organize the race plan. A calculator can clarify a target; it cannot establish your readiness.
Questions, answered.
Which PMC route should I train for?
Start with the longest day, the second-day distance and the time you can consistently ride. The 2026 Worcester-to-Provincetown option covers about 100 and 77 miles; Wellesley starts with about 85. Shorter one-day routes are also available.
Does the longest route still start in Sturbridge?
The 2026 route starts in Worcester and replaces the Sturbridge route. Check the organizer’s next-edition guide before arranging travel.
How should I pace two days of riding?
Keep day one sustainable. Avoid repeated hard climbs and practice back-to-back long rides before the event. A quick opening group is a poor reason to spend all of Sunday’s legs on Saturday.
Should I wait for rest stops to eat?
Use a practiced schedule between stops. Stops help you refill and eat familiar food; they are not a reason to postpone fueling for several hours.
Can I use these charts for navigation?
Use the organizer’s current route file and instructions. These coarse elevation samples show the general shape of the two 2026 example routes, not every turn or hill.
